RosNOU: Descendant of MIPT and MSU

June 20, 2009

It was in 1946. The Great Patriotic War came to the end and the first nuclear bombs already exploded in Japan. Russia needed scientists and there was a brisk demand for physicists at the time. On November 25, 1946, the Faculty of Applied Physics of Moscow Lomonosov State University (MSU) was established by the regulation of the USSR Council of Ministers.

In 1951 the Faculty of Applied Physics of Moscow Lomonosov State University was reorganized into Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).

In 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed various experts, lawyers, economists, specialists in engineering and innovative managers, were required for the country’s economy more than ever before.

In August 1991 MIPT graduates founded the Russian New University — a humanitarian university with the approach to education that was adopted at MIPT.

Since the day RosNOU was founded in 1991, the University and MIPT have been maintaining and developing scientific and scholastic relations. But they never interacted as far as creative activities and students’ life of the two related universities were concerned.

The situation improved when in April 2008 the students’ theatre “Prizrak Razuma” (the Humanities and Foreign Languages department of RosNOU) visited Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology for the first time.

Lena Koroleva, a participant of the “Prizrak Razuma”, recalls: ”We were anxious because we didn’t know what we would see on arriving in this “citadel of physics”. — We were not sure whether the audience there might accept our jokes. We were afraid that instead of laughing they would keep silent or might even hiss at us. But the reaction of the audience was quite friendly. The hall was full. The students, who had come to see our performance, enjoyed themselves, gave cheers and supported us”.

In 2009 students of four RosNOU departments and college who were included into the Joint Team of the KVN League (the Russian abbreviation for The Club of the Cheery and the Smart) presented a grand performance at MIPT. One amusing thing was discovered during the meeting. Taking into account the fact that MSU scientists were MIPT’s Founding Fathers and MIPT scientists founded RosNOU, one comes to the conclusion that MSU is RosNOU’s Grandfather!

Every grandson considers it his duty to wish many happy returns of the day on his grandfather’s birthday. That is why RosNOU Team of the KVN League went to MSU to celebrate the Days of Physicist there.

Here come some impressions of the participants of the event:

Kristina Kolesnikova said: “There was agonizing suspense, we were anxious but after we arrived we took to the atmosphere like ducks to water.

I felt quite at home while on the stage. It’s a wonderful feeling”.

Anna Kuznetsova added: “The atmosphere was cheerful, the people were friendly and the event was arranged very well”.

Sergey Yudin said: “We were surprised at such a hearty welcome. The audience was wonderful: most of our jokes and miniatures were received with enthusiasm. I would like MIPT students to come to RosNOU so that we could arrange a joint holiday.

Sergey’s words may be prophetic. RosNOU administration considers arranging in September an event: something like the Day of Humanities, and we are looking forward to meeting students of MSU and WIPT, our friendly universities, who are expected to pay a return visit to us.
