Electronic textbooks: an essentially new level of education

June 2, 2011

RosNOU held a training seminar on «E-learning at university: electronic tutorial materials for language and translation teaching». The workshop was conducted as a part of the project «Training text as hypertext: aspect of information and communication».

RosNOU has purchased a unique software package, Intro Trans Pro, that allows students to learn languages and make translations without any direct assistance of a professor, said Dmitry Smirnov, deputy director of the ComparSoft company. A professor’s knowledge is converted in a digital form through a special electronic shell Intro Trans, the shell interacts with a student, gives him hints, makes corrections and comments and offers a chance to correct his mistakes through different interactive exercises without any assistance.

The system will be very effective especially for distant education, - said Olga Y. Ivanova, Dean of the School of Humanities and Foreign Languages. It is not so easy to handle Intro Trans, but the very thought of actual prospects of the system and the potential quality of education it offers is really breathtaking.

In the course of the seminar professors learned to design electronic textbooks on the technological basis Intro Trans. It will allow creating educational sets on different disciplines within the University, thus taking a student’s independent learning to an absolutely new level.

Also, a new digital lab of the School of Humanities and Foreign Languages was tested in the course of the seminar.
